Sustainability

Energy, materials, and environmental measurement, with the same rule: state the boundary, the data, and the uncertainty.

The question

Which sustainability claims survive a measurement, and which are only a model with an unstated boundary?

What I work on

  • Energy systems and field performance
  • Lifecycle accounting and functional units
  • Low-cost environmental sensing
  • Open data and transparent assumptions

Current work

The first work is method: define the system boundary, the functional unit, and the data quality before comparing options.

The program is built around measurements that can be checked, not around projections that cannot be audited.

Methods and standards

  • A stated system boundary and functional unit
  • Data quality and uncertainty notes
  • Separate measured values from modeled values
  • Open assumptions and reproducible calculations

Directions

  • Field measurement of small energy systems
  • Open datasets for energy and environmental variables
  • Lifecycle comparisons with explicit assumptions
  • Low-cost sensors calibrated against reference instruments
