The question
What can a careful, low-cost measurement tell us about a material or a mixture when the sample is small and the instrument is modest?
What I work on
- Sample preparation and matrix effects
- Spectroscopy and calibration curves
- Limits of detection and quantification
- Reproducibility across operators and days
Current work
Method development comes first: define the analyte, the matrix, the calibration, and the blank before collecting a result.
The same evidence standard applies as in the physics work. A number without its calibration and its blank is not a result.
Methods and standards
- Blanks, replicates, and calibration standards
- Detection and quantification limits
- Chain of custody and sample records
- Safety review before any wet-lab work
Directions
- Low-cost spectroscopy for water and soil
- Materials characterization with modest instruments
- Open laboratory protocols and reference samples
- Measurement of change in environmental samples
